Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive are known for their award winning gaming series like GTA and the Red Dead franchise. But while fans have been pining away for some news of both, it was only the latter one that received a confirmation of extension from its creators. So while we must still hold on to our hopes about getting a GTA 6, it is comforting to know that at least Red Dead Redemption 2 is on the way.
Talks about Red Dead Redemption 2 have been doing the rounds ever since its 2010 predecessor became a huge hit with both gamers and critics. In fact, Red Dead Redemption received a large number of accolades for its presentation of the wild Western genre in a game title and its heartfelt execution of John Marston, the outlaw’s story ensured an enduring fan base.
Needless to say, fans started hankering for a sequel soon after Red Dead Redemption was released. But we never really were sure about what the game might be called or what it was going to be. In all honesty, we did not even know that there was going to a Red Dead Redemption 2 before we were well into 2016. But despite a number of rumors doing the rounds about the game’s existence, we could not quite be sure of anything. The one time the fandom came close to knowing that a third entry in the Red Dead series was on the way was during Take Two’s earnings call in 2016 when the publisher said that they were invested in series like Red Dead and GTA on a long term basis. That obviously meant that we were about to get new entries in both the franchises. But while that was an obvious conclusion of sorts, what really worked our imagination was what was being circulated by inside sources close to the project.
The first one we heard was that the next game would be a little different in terms of the narrative, for it will mark a departure from the earlier games in the series in terms of the narrative approach it will take. This would be achieved, the rumors had stated, by centering the story of Red Dead Redemption 2 around not one, but multiple playable protagonists. Despite being just a rumors that we advised everyone to take with a healthy dose of salt, Rockstar’s revelation of the actual upcoming game showed off an interesting detail.

Rockstar unveiled Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2016 with a teaser poster, which was followed by a cinematic teaser trailer. But while everything looked great, what caught our attention was the presence of seven men donning cowboy hats in the distance. That does not really guarantee that all seven of them will be playable protagonists in the upcoming game, but it does serve as some food for thought.
In fact it might just be that all these characters will all be supporting NPCs who will undoubtedly be important to the game’s narrative. In fact, it is great to see that Rockstar is putting so much thought into Red Dead Redemption 2’s story and plot. But we really are looking forward to having multiple playable characters to give us a different perspective to the storylines. What if this time, Rockstar brought in a female protagonist? Surely, that would give the male-dominated Western narrative a fresh spin?
Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on eighth generation consoles in Fall 2017. The creators are yet to announce an actual release date.
